"What are the key UK and India tax dates I need to remember?"
The two tax years
The UK tax year starts on 6 April and ends on 5 April the following year.
India's financial year starts on 1 April and ends on 31 March the following year.
Main UK dates (Self Assessment)
- 5 October: deadline to tell HMRC you need to file a return, if you have not filed one before.
- 31 October: deadline for paper returns.
- 31 January: deadline for online returns, and for paying any tax owed. The first payment on account is also due then.
- 31 July: the second payment on account is due.
- Within 60 days of completion: reporting and paying tax on a sale of UK residential property, where this applies.
Main Indian dates (typical)
- 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March: the usual advance tax instalment dates, where advance tax applies.
- 31 July: the usual deadline for filing an individual return, for those whose accounts do not need to be audited.
- 31 December: the usual last date for a late or revised return.
Putting it together
The two calendars overlap. For example, Indian tax paid in a given financial year has to be matched against a UK tax year that starts and ends on different dates. Planning the order of filings, so that Indian figures are ready in time for the UK return, avoids late claims for relief.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the UK Self Assessment deadline?
Normally 31 January after the end of the tax year, for online returns and for paying the tax due.
Do I need to file in both countries?
It depends on your residence and where your income arises. Many people with income in both countries do need to file in both.
What if I have missed a deadline?
Act promptly. Late returns can usually still be filed, and an early approach to HMRC generally leaves you in a better position.
Do the dates change from year to year?
UK dates are stable. Indian dates are sometimes extended, so check each year.
