Frequently asked questions
Do I need to file a Self Assessment return?
Usually yes if you are self-employed, a landlord, a company director with untaxed income, have foreign income, owe the High Income Child Benefit Charge, or have other income HMRC has not taxed at source. If you are unsure, book a free call and we will tell you.
What are the Self Assessment deadlines?
The online return and the balancing payment are normally due by 31 January after the end of the tax year (which ends on 5 April). Payments on account fall due on 31 January and 31 July. Missing the filing deadline brings an automatic penalty.
I only just realised I should have filed. What now?
Do not ignore it. We can register you, prepare the late returns and deal with HMRC on any penalties. The earlier it is dealt with, the smaller the problem usually is.
Can you file my return if I live abroad?
Yes. Many of our clients are NRIs or expats with UK income. We handle everything remotely.
